Wonder Grubhub Acquisition Food Delivery

In a significant move in the food delivery industry, Wonder, a food hall-delivery chain founded by billionaire entrepreneur Marc Lore, has announced the acquisition of Grubhub from Just Eat Takeaway.com for an enterprise value of $650 million. The deal, announced on November 13, 2024, includes $500 million of senior notes and $150 million in cash.

Just Eat Takeaway, which acquired Grubhub in 2020 for $7.3 billion, has been seeking a buyer for the platform for over two years. The sale is expected to close in the first quarter of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. According to Just Eat Takeaway’s founder and CEO Jitse Groen, the sale will enhance the company’s cash generation capabilities and accelerate its growth.

Wonder, known for its innovative approach to food delivery, aims to integrate Grubhub into its platform to create a “super app” for mealtime. This integration will allow customers to order from a curated selection of Grubhub’s restaurant partners, alongside Wonder’s owned and operated restaurants and meal kits from Blue Apron, which Wonder acquired in 2023. The combined platform will offer restaurants, groceries, and meal kits on a single ordering app.

Grubhub, with over 375,000 merchants and 200,000 delivery partners across the United States, will significantly expand Wonder’s reach. Wonder currently operates 28 locations in the Northeast and plans to expand to 90 locations by next year. The acquisition will also make all Wonder locations available on Grubhub for third-party delivery.

Wonder has also raised an additional $250 million from new investors to support its growth and mission to make great food more accessible. The company is pioneering a new category of “Fast Fine” dining and is known for its proprietary technology and high-quality food delivery with order-to-delivery times under 30 minutes.
