Worcester Passion Play Performance In Cathedral Square

WORCESTER, England — The annual Passion Play, a live reenactment of the Easter story held in Cathedral Square, will not return this Good Friday. Organizers are now seeking support to revive the performance for 2026.

Key figures behind the Passion Play, which dramatizes pivotal events including the Last Supper, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus, have decided to step back this year, resulting in the cancellation of the show. The play has attracted thousands of spectators in recent years.

James Hyslop, chairman of the Worcester Passion Play charity, shared his disappointment in the decision but expressed hope for the future. “We still have all the props ready, including three crucifixes that are currently at the bottom of my garden,” he told the Worcester News. “We can’t let this go; the charity remains operational, and we will discuss its future. Watch this space.”

Hyslop emphasized the importance of community involvement in the performance, saying, “The love within the community was special, and that’s a reason why we have to keep the charity alive.” He encouraged individuals with directing and theatre experience to express their interest in contributing to future performances.

The production typically costs around £25,000 each year and relies on the dedication of approximately 120 volunteers, many affiliated with churches around Worcestershire. Although there will be no live presentation this year, the charity plans to release a video of last year’s full performance and a shortened version on its website, allowing viewers to reflect on the story.

“We hope that on Good Friday, churches will create spaces to watch the video and reflect on it,” Hyslop added. He expressed gratitude to supporters, sharing a touching memory from last year: “There was a little girl of around seven with her mum. It was lovely to see she was moved by some scenes and even applauded. The silence from over 1,000 people watching told us we were getting it right.”
