New York Yankees Coaching Staff Changes

NEW YORK, NY — After a season marked by disappointment, the New York Yankees are changing their coaching staff, parting ways with bullpen coach Mike Harkey and first-base coach Travis Chapman, sources confirmed on October 14, 2025.

Harkey, who joined the Yankees as a bullpen coach in 2008 and returned in 2016, has been a long-standing favorite among players. Despite his rapport, the bullpen struggled under his leadership this season, finishing with the 23rd-best era in Major League Baseball.

Chapman, who had various roles within the Yankees organization, transitioned to the major-league staff in 2022 as the first-base and infield coach. This year, the Yankees’ infield ranked 16th in outs above average, raising questions about Chapman’s effectiveness in his role.

The Yankees’ defense and bullpen shortcomings became glaring during their playoff exit against the Toronto Blue Jays. Following their loss in the American League Division Series, many observers note that management may not be done re-evaluating their coaching structure.

Matt Blake, the pitching coach, and Tanner Swanson, the catching coordinator, have club options that may affect their futures. Also, the contracts for bench coach Brad Ausmus and third-base coach Luis Rojas have expired.

The coaching changes come as the Yankees attempt to rebound from a lackluster postseason performance, announcing previous adjustments in their coaching staff. While Aaron Boone remains the manager, the front office continues examining ways to improve for the 2026 season.

As the Yankees move forward, they could look to fill positions with familiar faces, as both Harkey and Chapman leave behind a history with the organization.
