30 Years Ago: The Tension Between Carrey and Jones on Batman Forever

LOS ANGELES, CA — On May 31, 1995, fans were introduced to the vibrant world of ‘Batman Forever,’ featuring Val Kilmer as Batman and a dynamic cast including Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones. As the film approaches its 30th anniversary, fond memories mix with tales of behind-the-scenes drama between Carrey and Jones.
Carrey played The Riddler, while Jones portrayed Two-Face. Their performances, full of energy, led to many memorable moments in this superhero sequel. However, tensions ran high on the set. Carrey recalled feeling excitement and wonder about working with Jones, saying, ‘I thought, if he’s a pain in the butt I’ll use it, and if he’s, you know, a happy guy, I’ll have a good time.’ He noted that their relationship had elements of both approaches.
Despite this optimism, Carrey later revealed that Jones’ behavior was often hostile. When questioned about their real-life friendship, Carrey explained, ‘No, not really. He’s a different kind of guy, you know? He’s a strange bird.’
A notable incident occurred before they filmed their first scene. Carrey approached Jones at a restaurant, only to see the color drain from Jones’ face. ‘I realized I had become the face of his pain.’ When they finally embraced, Jones famously told Carrey, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you,’ adding humorously, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery.’
Director Joel Schumacher later shared insights into the duo’s dynamic, stating that Jones was not kind to Carrey during the production. ‘Tommy is, and I say this with great respect, a scene stealer,’ Schumacher said. ‘But you can’t steal the scene from Jim Carrey; it’s impossible. I think it irked Tommy.’
In a twist during filming, Carrey reportedly struck Jones with The Riddler’s cane, leading Jones to quip that Carrey had ‘cracked me right in the family jewels.’ Initially, it appeared to be an accident, but doubts linger about the true intent behind the act.
As ‘Batman Forever’ celebrates its milestone, fans are reminded not just of its iconic moments but also the complex interactions that shaped its legacy.
