As the hit series ‘Young Sheldon‘ progresses towards its series finale, the antepenultimate episode recently featured a myriad of callbacks and Easter eggs from its predecessor ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ The episode saw Sheldon exhibiting familiar habits like his three-knock entrance ritual and references to his future romantic endeavors in California.

The show also reintroduced a host of returning characters, including Nate from King Kong Comics portrayed by Steve Burns, Medford High faculty staff Mr. Givens played by Brian Stepanek, and Ms. Hitchens brought to life by Sarah Baker. A significant comeback in the latest episode was Sheldon’s childhood friend Tam, essayed by Ryan Phuong, who was last seen in Season 4.

Tam was the foremost character from ‘Young Sheldon’ to make the crossover to ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ The adult version of Tam, played by Robert Wu, appeared in a Season 12 episode of ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ shedding light on why Tam landed himself on Sheldon’s enemies list.

In the recent episode of ‘Young Sheldon,’ a reference was made to Tam’s girlfriend, hinting at a future marriage. However, there was no mention of Tam moving to California with Sheldon, as previously alluded to in ‘The Big Bang Theory.’

Speaking with TVLine, co-showrunner Steve Holland revealed that a more explicit dialogue about Tam moving with Sheldon to California was considered but felt overly forceful. Holland emphasized that Sheldon’s assumption of Tam accompanying him was through his self-centric worldview rather than a fact discussed between the two characters.

Ultimately, Tam’s return in the recent episode served as a means to tie up loose ends and offer a nod to ‘The Big Bang Theory’ as ‘Young Sheldon’ approaches its conclusion.
