‘Zelda’ Live-Action Film Slated for March 2027 Release

LOS ANGELES, March 28, 2025 — Nintendo has announced the theatrical release date for the live-action adaptation of its iconic video game franchise, “The Legend of Zelda.” The film is set to premiere on March 26, 2027, a significant date for fans eagerly awaiting this long-anticipated project.
The release announcement was made public via Nintendo’s new app, Nintendo Today, on March 28, 2025. This news comes nearly a year and a half after the movie was first revealed in November 2023, when series creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment and producer Avi Arad.
Wes Ball, known for directing the “Maze Runner” trilogy and last year’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” will helm the project, bringing his expertise to the adaptation. Ball is also co-producing the film alongside Miyamoto and Arad under the Oddball Entertainment banner and Arad Productions, Inc. Currently, casting and plot details have not been disclosed.
In a statement at the time of the initial announcement, Miyamoto expressed his excitement, saying, “I have been working on the live-action film of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega-hit films. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
The growing interest in a Zelda film follows the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide after its April 2023 release, significantly boosting Nintendo’s confidence in cinematic adaptations. The animated film, a collaboration with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, became the 18th-highest-grossing film globally, highlighting the franchise’s widespread appeal.
Nintendo’s decision to unveil the film’s release date through its app marks a strategic shift in communication, signaling confidence in Nintendo Today as a primary channel for important announcements. The app, available for download on both Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store, requires a Nintendo Account for access, suggesting that the company is embracing digital platforms for audience engagement.
As the production continues, fans are keenly awaiting further announcements regarding plot specifics and casting decisions. The live-action adaptation is expected to delve into the franchise’s rich lore, centered around the characters Link and Princess Zelda as they strive to protect the kingdom of Hyrule from the evil Ganon.
