In response to the detection of eight cases of Zika virus in Maharashtra, health authorities in Pune have heightened their vigilance and implemented precautionary measures to combat the spread of the virus. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a directive to states emphasizing the importance of monitoring and screening pregnant women for potential Zika infection.

The Zika virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, with particular concern surrounding its impact on pregnant women due to the risk of transmission to the foetus. As of now, six confirmed cases have been reported in Pune, with the remaining two cases located in Kolhapur and Sangamner. Atul Goel, the director general of health services, has urged states to closely monitor the situation.

Rajesh Dighe, the assistant chief medical officer at Pune Municipal Corporation, highlighted the necessity of timely testing and surveillance practices in detecting and managing Zika cases. From the first reported case on June 20, Pune has screened over 21,000 patients, with samples being sent to the National Institute of Virology for testing within 24 hours.

The symptoms of Zika virus are generally mild, including fever, rash, headache, joint pain, and muscle pain, as indicated by the CDC in the United States. While there is currently no specific cure for Zika, supportive care such as hydration and rest can aid in recovery over a few days.

Precautionary measures recommended by health officials include using mosquito repellent, eliminating mosquito breeding sites by removing stagnant water, and practicing safe sex to prevent potential transmission. The testing and surveillance efforts involve multiple institutions such as the National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, and private hospitals offering rapid testing.

States have been directed to report any detected Zika cases to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme and the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control. Enhanced entomological surveillance and vector control activities are being ramped up in various settings to curb the spread of the virus.

India had its first reported Zika case in Gujarat in 2016, with subsequent cases emerging in multiple states including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Kerala, and Karnataka. The recent spike in cases in Maharashtra has prompted a proactive approach by health authorities to contain the spread of the virus.
