Investigation Launched into Fatal Collision on Bruce Highway in North Queensland

An investigation is currently underway following a tragic collision that occurred on the Bruce Highway in North Queensland. The incident, which took place approximately 8 kilometers north of Bowen, involved a Greyhound bus and a four-wheel drive towing a caravan. The collision resulted in three fatalities and left two individuals critically injured, all of whom were passengers on the bus.

The LNP Member for Burdekin, Dale Last, raised concerns about the state of the highway where the crash occurred, describing it as a ‘goat track’ and mentioning its unsafe conditions due to potholes. Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Ry Collins also acknowledged the challenging nature of the road, highlighting it as an accident black spot with narrow shoulders and sections prone to accidents.

According to Queensland Police Superintendent Graeme Paine, road conditions will be a focal point of the investigation into the cause of the crash. The collision happened on an open highway, and the road conditions will play a significant role in understanding the events leading up to the incident.

Following the collision, 27 people were assessed at the scene by paramedics. Seven patients, including five men and two women, were transported to Townsville University Hospital for further treatment, with four individuals remaining under medical care as of the latest update from hospital officials.

Dr. Jason Yates, the acting chief medical officer at Townsville University Hospital, commended the efforts of the medical teams mobilized to respond to the mass casualty event. He stressed the importance of providing support to those affected by the tragic events, urging individuals to seek assistance if needed.

In light of the crash, Mr. Last criticized the inadequacy of funds allocated for the improvement of the Bruce Highway, emphasizing the urgent need for substantial investments to upgrade the entire stretch of the highway. He called for a significant injection of funds to address the longstanding issues along the Bruce Highway.
