Greece Earthquake Tsunami Warning

(FRY, GREECE) — A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Greece early Wednesday local time, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake has prompted Greek Emergency Management to issue a warning for a possible tsunami risk.

The earthquake occurred at 1:51 a.m. Eastern European Time, approximately 14 miles southeast of Fry. The USGS initially reported the magnitude as 6.1, but later adjusted it to 5.9, stating the epicenter is located about 30 miles southeast of Kasos.

Authorities urged coastal residents to “move away from the coast immediately” following the quake. The Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection emphasized the need for precaution as seismologists continue to analyze the data.

As of now, the USGS has received reports from 894 people who felt the tremors. They noted that additional data might lead to changes in the reported magnitude or the earthquake’s impact map.
