John Daly 2025 Pga Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Legendary golfer John Daly will not compete in the 2025 PGA Championship, opting instead to play in the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Alabama. The decision comes as Daly, who famously won the PGA Championship in 1991 as a ninth alternate, has faced numerous health challenges over the years.

Daly, now 59, stated, “Waking up is a win for me,” reflecting on the toll injuries have taken on his ability to compete consistently. After previously being seen back on the golf course, he acknowledged his decision to skip Quail Hollow, stating, “I can go there [PGA Championship] and miss the cut and get $6,000. But I’m playing Birmingham. I love Regions. They’re a great sponsor.”

The decision has been met with disappointment by fans who cherish Daly’s colorful style and personality in the sport. He has not performed well at the PGA Championship in recent years, failing to make the cut in his last eight appearances. Last year, Daly withdrew after the first round due to a thumb injury.

His last significant performance at a major was in 2014, when he tied for 18th at the PGA Championship, a stark contrast from his glory days when he won two majors, including the 1995 Open Championship.

Despite his recent health battles, including multiple surgeries, he expressed optimism regarding his return to competitive golf. “I’m like Lazarus— I keep coming back from the dead,” he remarked at the Hoag Classic in March.

While the PGA Championship will proceed without him, many hope it is not the last time they see Daly on a major championship course. Fans and fellow golfers alike recognize his lasting impact on the sport and eagerly await his next move as he competes in the senior circuit.
