Tornadoes Strike North Texas, Damage Reported in Gordon

PALO PINTO COUNTY, Texas — The National Weather Service has confirmed that at least seven tornadoes touched down across North Texas on Sunday, including an EF-1 tornado in the town of Gordon, where peak winds reached 105 mph.
The tornado in Gordon was part of a severe weather outbreak that prompted warnings in the area. Across Palo Pinto County, emergency officials reported that 36 buildings were damaged, with five suffering major destruction, including one completely destroyed.
As a result of the damage, Gordon Independent School District (ISD) canceled classes for the rest of the week, with officials citing debris and severe damage around the school’s football field and track area. Gordon ISD stated, “Our first concern is safety.”
Palo Pinto County’s Emergency Services revealed that four individuals were injured due to the storms but have since been treated and released from local hospitals.
Further assessments revealed additional tornadoes in Mingus, Santo, and Eastland County, with varying intensities, including one EF-0 near Morton Valley and another in Santo.
Power outages have also been reported, with over 1,200 customers without electricity in Gordon. Crews are actively working to restore power to the affected areas.
“Severe weather likely involving tornado activity has caused significant property damage,” said Chad Jordan, emergency management coordinator for Palo Pinto County. “We are assessing the damage as quickly as we can.”
As of Monday afternoon, about 60% of the community had power restored, but the extent of the overall damage is still being evaluated. Forecasts indicate additional storms are possible in North Texas later this week.
The situation continues to develop, and residents are urged to stay tuned for updates on safety and community recovery efforts.
