NBC Nightly News Welcomes Tom Llamas as New Anchor

New York, NY — NBC News has announced that veteran correspondent Tom Llamas will become the new anchor of NBC Nightly News starting June 2. Llamas will take over the role from current anchor Lester Holt, who will sign off on May 30.
The network is launching a marketing campaign to introduce Llamas to viewers, emphasizing the legacy of Nightly News and Llamas’ familiarity as a correspondent. He currently anchors ‘Top Story’ on the Now streaming service and first joined NBC News in 2021 as a senior national correspondent.
The promotional campaign highlights the program’s rich history, stating, “Legacy isn’t handed down, it’s carried forward. As the world changes, we look for what endures.” The ad features past anchors of Nightly News before focusing on Llamas, who remarked, “And from one era to the next, trust is the anchor.”
Llamas has covered significant news events for NBC, including the death of Pope Francis and the continuing Israel–Hamas conflict. When he steps into the anchor chair, he will become the fourth anchor in 40 years and the first to hold linear and streaming roles simultaneously.
This transition marks a pivotal moment for NBC Nightly News as it adapts to the evolving media landscape while maintaining its core mission.
