Spartanburg County Coroner's Office Investigation

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Authorities have determined that a death found near an open U-Haul truck is not suspicious following an investigation. Officers from the Spartanburg Police Department discovered the body on Sunday around 1 p.m. on John B White Sr. Boulevard, near a Valero gas station.

Initial examinations suggested the death was suspicious when officers found a white man lying next to an open U-Haul truck, accompanied by a mattress, a purple bra, and a cell phone. However, there was no identifying documentation nearby.

A witness at the gas station told police he noticed buzzards near the scene while walking to a soup kitchen earlier that day, initially thinking a dog had been attacked. Upon returning, he discovered the body and alerted someone to call the police, but did not specify who that person was.

As the investigation progressed, police learned that the deceased had rented the U-Haul, and the rental company confirmed he was last seen at their location with a woman identified as his ‘wife’ on Friday.

On Monday, the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office completed an examination of the body. Coroner Rusty Clevenger stated, ‘There does not appear to be anything suspicious about the death.’ Further details about the incident have yet to be released as authorities continue their investigation.
