Portland Prepares for Heat as Temperatures Rise

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — As temperatures rise in Portland, city officials are taking action to help residents cope with the heat. Mayor Keith Wilson stressed the importance of adapting to the warm weather in a public address on June 8, 2025. He urged residents to avoid over-exerting themselves, saying, “Heat comes fast, and it takes weeks to acclimate. So, I just ask that you don’t go over and exert yourself today. Use the shade, use the air conditioning, use the libraries.”
During this period of high temperatures, libraries in Portland and Midland will extend their hours until 8 p.m. to serve as cool spaces for residents. While the city is working to open splash pads for the public, these will take a few days to be ready. In the meantime, locals are encouraged to utilize available resources for relief from the heat.
In response to the heating trend, Oaks Park closed early at 4 p.m. to ensure the safety of its staff and visitors. Those affected by the early closure received “bounce-back” bracelets, allowing them to return on another day.
City officials warned that these early heat days can have significant health impacts, especially as the community is not yet acclimated to high temperatures. Residents are advised to stock up on fans, air conditioning units, and sunblock curtains. Signs of heat-related illnesses can include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and muscle cramps. If these symptoms occur, officials recommend finding a cool area, drinking fluids, or taking a cool shower.
For more severe cases, residents should contact emergency services by calling 911. Mayor Wilson continues to encourage all Portlanders to stay safe and be mindful of the heat.
