Seattle Faces Potential Record Heat This Weekend

SEATTLE — A Heat Advisory is now in effect for the Puget Sound region as temperatures are expected to soar into the 80s to low 90s through Monday. Residents from Snohomish County south to the Oregon border should prepare for warm weather as the region experiences its hottest weekend of the year so far.
The National Weather Service has activated a First Alert for this weather event, warning that high temperatures could affect lives, property, or travel in the Pacific Northwest. The advisory is expected to remain in effect until 10 p.m. Monday.
During this heat advisory, medical experts advise those sensitive to heat to take extra precautions, particularly those without effective cooling or adequate hydration. It is also important to keep children and pets safe, as vehicle temperatures can escalate dangerous quickly.
Weather forecasts indicate highs ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s on Saturday, escalating to upper 80s and even approaching 90 degrees on Sunday. Some areas in southern Puget Sound, particularly near Gold Bar and Puyallup, are more likely to reach these higher temperatures.
Rich Marriott, a senior meteorologist at KING 5, noted that temperatures north of Everett are expected to remain cooler, likely staying in the upper 70s. Lows during the nights on Sunday and Monday are forecast to only drop into the upper 50s, providing little relief from the day’s warmth.
This weekend’s anticipated highs could threaten to break previous temperature records. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport recorded a high of 81 degrees on May 28, and the record for June 8 is 87 degrees, set in 2015.
The warm wave is expected to gradually subside, with cooler temperatures returning mid-week; however, dry conditions will persist without significant rainfall in sight for the next week. According to drought reports, western Washington is experiencing abnormally dry conditions, receiving approximately 4.1 inches below normal rainfall through May.
