Kevin Durant’s Future: Trade Preferences and Complex Negotiations Ahead

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Kevin Durant is expected to be traded this offseason as he approaches the final year of his contract with the Phoenix Suns. Recent reports indicate that Durant has specific preferences for his next destination, favoring the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, and Miami Heat.
Sources told ESPN that Durant would commit to a long-term extension with these teams. However, the Suns are open to negotiating with any team that offers the best deal for the franchise, potentially trading Durant outside of his preferred list.
Durant, who turns 37 in September, is on an expiring contract worth $54.7 million for the 2025-26 season. Once traded, he is eligible to sign a two-year extension worth up to $122 million on July 6. If he waits six months, that deal could increase to $124 million.
This offseason follows a February trade deadline that saw Durant almost move from Phoenix but chose to remain with the team. He has consistently excelled on the court, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in just 62 games this past season. His shooting statistics are notable, including a league-best 49.7% on jumpers and 53.1% from midrange.
The Suns had a disappointing season, finishing 11th in the Western Conference with a payroll that leads the league’s history. These struggles have led to significant organizational changes, including the hiring of new general manager Brian Gregory.
Despite his preferences, Durant’s situation is complicated. Trade discussions must account for his contract, age, and injury history, making negotiations delicate. The Timberwolves and Heat are also in the mix for a trade, and the possibility of surprise suitors remains.
While teams like the Spurs and Rockets could benefit from adding a superstar like Durant, the potential costs in talent and draft capital might deter them. San Antonio prioritizes developing its young roster, while Houston appears hesitant to alter its core, even for a player of Durant’s caliber.
As the offseason unfolds, the NBA community is watching closely to see where Durant will land, marking a significant chapter in his storied career.
