New York Times Strands Word Search Game

NEW YORK, NY – The New York Times’ latest word game, Strands, has returned with a new puzzle for players on June 18. This elevated take on the classic word search challenges players to uncover words that are connected by mood-related themes.

Strands requires players to find linked words in a six-by-eight grid, using letters that can travel in any direction—up, down, left, right, and diagonally. Words may also change direction, creating unique shapes. Each letter is part of an answer, connected by an overarching theme.

The spangram, a significant word summarizing the theme and spanning the grid, must also be identified. For today’s puzzle, the spangram is “SADNESS,” which relates to a somber emotional state.

The theme for today’s game is aptly named “Down time.” As players navigate the grid, they will seek synonyms such as MELANCHOLY, WOEBEGONE, BLUE, GLOOMY, TEAR, and DOLEFUL.

“Down time” hints at relaxation but carries a deeper emotional weight as well, reflecting various ways to describe feelings of sadness.

Players often find themselves needing hints to navigate the complexity of the puzzle, especially with longer words. If three valid non-theme words of four letters or more are submitted, players unlock the Hint button, making it easier to identify the theme words.

Today’s Strands invites players to find enjoyment in solving while embracing the nuanced feelings associated with each word. Keep an eye out for the full grid, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you get stuck. Happy hunting!
