Explosion Leads to Fire at Alton Baker Park in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. — Fire crews responded to an explosion near Alton Baker Park on June 17, 2025, at approximately 5:45 p.m. The Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) reported light smoke in the area of the bike path off Leo Harris Parkway south of PK Park.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a fire covering a half-acre in a densely wooded area of East Alton Baker Park. Given the size and density of the vegetation, additional resources were requested to tackle the blaze effectively.
The fire was brought under control by 6:24 p.m. Investigators identified the cause as a fire that originated from an unhoused encampment. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
Crews maintained a presence at the scene until 7:45 p.m. to ensure that the fire was fully extinguished and to carry out overhauling operations to prevent any flare-ups. In total, the response team included two fire engines, a Type 3 brush engine, a water tender, a battalion chief, and two deputy fire marshals.
