ATLANTA – Mayor Andre Dickens announced on Wednesday the City of Atlanta‘s Summer Safety Plan, designed to keep residents and visitors safe during the bustling summer months. The announcement came from the recently opened Public Safety Training Center, where both the mayor and Atlanta police committed to enhancing safety across the city.

At the press conference, Dickens highlighted the importance of youth programs in improving public safety. He stated that engaging young people in work programs, camps, and recreational activities is key to reducing crime rates. “I said then when we brought down youth crime, crime overall would come down, and it has,” Dickens affirmed. He emphasized the need to provide guidance, mentorship, and job opportunities for young people.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum echoed the mayor’s sentiments, announcing a 33% reduction in homicides compared to last year, along with a 25% decrease in individuals shot. “We have seen significant progress, but our work is not done,” Schierbaum said, vowing to continue efforts to keep the community safe during the summer ahead.

Community involvement remains a priority. Schierbaum urged residents to engage in safety practices, such as registering security cameras and reporting suspicious activity. “Your tip could be the missing piece that gives this family justice,” Schierbaum said.

The mayor also spoke about the tragic shooting death of 12-year-old Ja’Nylen Amir Greggs, emphasizing that while this incident was devastating, it does not indicate an overall rise in crime. Dickens expressed his condolences to the boy’s family and reiterated the commitment to ensuring that children feel safe in their neighborhoods.

“We never want that to happen. We never want any of our young people to feel afraid to go anywhere,” Dickens said. The mayor stressed the ongoing efforts to connect youth with jobs and activities that provide mentorship and guidance.

Overall, crime statistics show a promising trend, with the Atlanta police stating a 10% reduction in crime rates overall. As summer approaches, city officials remain focused on community engagement and prevention strategies to foster a safer environment for all.
