Kendre Miller Faces Tough Competition at Saints Training Camp

Metairie, Louisiana – The New Orleans Saints have completed the first leg of their training camp and will head to California on Wednesday for the next phase. The team will train at UC Irvine and has a preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers scheduled for Sunday.
After 11 practices, the Saints are beginning to assess their 53-man roster. While all three quarterbacks appear in the mix for the starting position, rookie Spencer Rattler has stood out with an impressive camp performance. However, third-year running back Kendre Miller‘s inconsistency has raised doubts about his place on the team.
Miller has struggled, failing to meet expectations set during previous seasons. Although he possesses significant talent, the emergence of other running backs could push him off the roster. The Saints may keep him for his potential, but his path to a secure spot is becoming less certain.
In the backfield, newcomer Jones has impressed with his speed, creating an opportunity for himself. His ability to contribute on special teams enhances his chances of making the final roster. Meanwhile, Neal’s ongoing hamstring injury might affect his standing but does not automatically exclude him.
The wide receiver group needs depth beyond starters Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. Cooks continues to show leadership, but his production has been underwhelming during camp. Tipton‘s strong performance over the past two years places him favorably, while 2024 draft pick Bub Means has not made a lasting impression.
Concerns about depth on the offensive line persist. Clapp and Kyle Hergel have had issues with bad snaps during practices. The team may experiment with various alignments should injuries occur. Young has returned to his swing tackle role, but questions remain about their preparedness if called upon.
Tight ends Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau are traveling with the team despite not participating in practices due to knee injuries. If they can return in time for the regular season, their roster spots are likely secure; otherwise, they risk starting on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
Rookie linebacker Stutsman has received an unexpected number of first-team reps, indicating his rapid adjustment to the professional level. However, competition remains stiff as veterans like Shepherd and Saunders vie for key positions on the defensive line.
At the cornerback position, the Saints have only four players on their projected roster. Nevertheless, Burgess is positioned as a backup nickel, displaying solid performance during camp.
The coaching staff’s recent signing of punter Kroeger suggests dissatisfaction with current options Hayball and Burnip, though the punting competition will continue to be evaluated as camp progresses.
