Quarterback Duo Teases Each Other Ahead of Preseason Opener

Washington, D.C. — In a display of camaraderie, quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Sam Hartman showcased their friendship before Friday’s preseason opener. The two players, who joined the Commanders last season, shared light-hearted moments as they arrived at the stadium.
Daniels, dressed in casual attire, jokingly introduced Hartman as he walked through the hallway. “Hey, it’s Sam Hartman everybody! GQ. GQ,” Daniels said, eliciting laughter from onlookers.
Daniels was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after a standout season at the college level, earning the Heisman Trophy. He had a remarkable rookie year with 3,568 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, alongside 891 rushing yards. Hartman, meanwhile, signed with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent. He previously made a name for himself as the ACC’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns, having played five years at Wake Forest before one season at Notre Dame.
As the Commanders prepare for their game against the New England Patriots, Daniels is not expected to play due to rest, and Hartman is slated to start. The two quarterbacks plan to split reps during the game, showcasing their readiness for a competitive matchup.
The Commanders hope to build on their strong performance from last season, which included an NFC Championship appearance under head coach Dan Quinn. The team made critical roster moves this offseason, including trading for a wide receiver from the San Francisco 49ers.
A key concern for the franchise remains star receiver Terry McLaurin, who is seeking a new contract after requesting a trade last month. Coach Quinn expressed optimism about resolving McLaurin’s situation, emphasizing the balance between business and player relationships within the team.
