Binghamton Rumble Ponies Championship Game

ERIE, Pa. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies defeated the Erie SeaWolves, 8-2, in Game 3 of the Eastern League Championship Series on Wednesday night at UPMC Park. This victory secured Binghamton’s fourth Eastern League championship in franchise history and its first since 2014.

Binghamton’s road to the title included winning the Eastern League championship in 1992, 1994, and 2014. The team faced elimination after losing Game 1 of the series but rallied to win the final two games for the championship.

The Rumble Ponies finished the regular season with a franchise record of 90 wins, the best record in Double-A, and captured both the first-half and second-half Northeast Division titles.

The game was tied 2-2 heading into the sixth inning when Binghamton took the lead with three runs fueled by two home runs. Third baseman Jacob Reimer hit a first-pitch solo home run to put Binghamton ahead, 3-2. Right fielder D’Andre Smith added a single, and catcher Chris Suero followed with a two-run home run, extending the lead to 5-2.

Right-hander Joander Suarez pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and right-hander TJ Shook struck out two batters while stranding runners on second and third in the seventh. Right-hander Carlos Guzman recorded a six-out save, marking his first of the postseason.

Binghamton continued to build its lead in the ninth inning as Smith came through with a two-run single and Suero had a sacrifice fly, making it 8-2.

Right-hander Jack Wenninger earned the win, recording 11 strikeouts over 5.0 innings while allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out 11 of the 15 batters that he retired in his impressive performance.

Binghamton opened the scoring in the first inning with two runs thanks to a single from center fielder A.J. Ewing and back-to-back RBI singles from Smith and Suero. Erie tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-run single by right fielder Ben Malgeri, but Binghamton regained control in the sixth and maintained it through to the end.

The Rumble Ponies are set to begin the 2026 regular season against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on April 3 at Delta Dental Stadium.

Postgame notes include that second baseman Wyatt Young finished the postseason hitting .533 and had a notable run in the championship series, while Suero’s home run contributed to a strong performance in the decisive game.
