NBCUniversal May Pull Channels from YouTube TV by September 30
NEW YORK, NY — NBCUniversal (NBCU) is warning that it may remove its channels from YouTube TV if a new contract is not reached by September 30. This dispute could affect popular shows, including WWE SmackDown, for subscribers who rely on the streaming service.
According to a statement from NBCU, the company and Google, YouTube TV’s parent company, are struggling to agree on financial terms. NBCU claims Google has refused to accept competitive rates and terms. “Google, with its $3 trillion market cap, already controls what Americans see online through search and ads – now it wants to control what we watch,” NBCU stated.
This disagreement is not the first challenge YouTube TV has faced regarding programming. Recently, Fox had a similar standoff but ultimately reached an agreement to keep its channels on the platform. Now, NBCU seems to be heading toward a deadline without resolution.
YouTube TV spokesperson indicated they are committed to finding a fair deal. However, they criticized NBCU for requesting higher payments than what consumers pay for content on Peacock, NBCU’s own streaming service. If NBCU programming is removed, YouTube TV has promised customers a $10 credit.
The potential blackout of NBCU channels threatens to impact many viewers, particularly WWE fans. While WWE Premium Live Events air exclusively on ESPN, weekly shows like SmackDown are still broadcast under the NBCU umbrella.
As negotiations continue, the outcome remains uncertain. Without an agreement, fans could miss out on essential content, leaving them to wonder where to turn for their favorite shows.
