Abbott Elementary Season 5 Premiere

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Abbott Elementary returned for its fifth season on October 1, 2025, with the episode titled “Team Building.” The new season kicks off with the familiar group of teachers facing significant changes, including new staff and logistical challenges within their underfunded school.

The season premiere features the introduction of Dominic Clark, played by Luke Tennie, who was taught by veteran teacher Barbara Howard in kindergarten. With Barbara’s guidance, Dominic is eager to establish himself in his new role, creating an interesting dynamic as Janine Teagues navigates her own transition from new teacher to mentor.

In the spirit of teamwork, the school undergoes team-building exercises facilitated by Craig after last season’s scandal involving bribery from a nearby golf course. Gregory Eddie humorously observes that these exercise sessions are “punishment couched in team-building activities.” Meanwhile, the physical condition of the school continues to be a source of concern, with the break room ceiling collapsing and a gas leak incident disrupting the staff.

Janine, who now faces a classroom of 40 students, and Melissa Schemmenti, who teaches older students for the first time, reflect the ongoing struggles of educators in an under-resourced environment. Meanwhile, Barbara has reinvigorated her passion by teaching a music class, adapting to current trends.

Ava Coleman also entertains with her new relationship with O’Shon while her chaotic leadership style continues to make waves among the staff. The episode balances light-hearted moments with real issues teachers face, such as resource scarcity and increased scrutiny from the school district.

Brunson, who writes and stars in the series, delivers a blend of humor and heartfelt moments, highlighting the cyclical nature of teaching. The episode ends with Janine realizing she can now offer wisdom to upcoming teachers, indicating her growth as an educator.

The show’s creator has hinted that while the cast is interested in pursuing other projects, they are committed to keeping Abbott Elementary engaging for its audience. As the fifth season unfolds, fans can expect more character development, humor, and insights into the lives of these dedicated educators.

Abbott Elementary airs Wednesday nights on ABC and streams on Hulu.
