Dwayne Johnson Mark Kerr Transformation

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Dwayne Johnson, the celebrated actor known for his roles in blockbuster films, has undergone a profound transformation to play MMA fighter Mark Kerr in the upcoming film, “The Smashing Machine.” During a recent media event, Johnson shared the rigorous preparation that took him months to complete.

Johnson spent nearly three minutes discussing the mental and physical changes he underwent for the role and turned to Kerr to ask, “How did I do, by the way?” Kerr, visibly moved, recounted a touching moment with his son, who praised Johnson’s portrayal. “Dad, he walks like you. He looks like you. He talks like you,” Kerr’s son said after seeing the film. This affirmation brought Kerr to tears.

To embody Kerr, a 6-foot-3, 260-pound former NCAA champion turned MMA pioneer, Johnson committed to an intense training regimen. He gained approximately 30 pounds, transforming his physique while also using over 20 prosthetics crafted by Oscar-winning special effects artist Kazu Hiro.

Each day of filming involved three to four hours of makeup, helping Johnson achieve an appearance that many critics claim is one of his best performances yet. “I had never worked harder for a role,” Johnson explained. He emphasized the importance of authenticity, working with a voice coach to mimic Kerr’s soft-spoken demeanor.

The screenplay is not only influenced by Kerr’s life but also addresses the darker aspects of the wrestling and MMA industries, including the impact of addiction among fighters. Director Benny Safdie aimed to create a narrative that resonates with fans of both the original documentary and new viewers.

Johnson’s training camp began in April 2024, just after a separate 12-week camp for WrestleMania 40. His rigorous daily schedule included cardio, weightlifting, and actual MMA fighting sessions. He noted, “My thought early was just about Mark. This was something special to do for him and for my friends we’ve lost along the way.”

While preparing for fight scenes, Johnson demonstrated a willingness to fully commit. He even encouraged his scene partner, a real fighter, to deliver a controlled punch during a key moment, showcasing his dedication to remaining authentic.

The film also touches on Kerr’s personal life, including his turbulent marriage and struggles with substance abuse, with scenes that Johnson described as “raw” and “intense.” He drew inspiration from his own childhood to deliver a powerful performance, reflecting deep emotions tied to his family background.

As “The Smashing Machine” is set to hit theaters on Friday, Johnson’s work in transforming into Mark Kerr has been met with critical acclaim, setting the stage for potential award nominations in the future.
