Thunder Gear Up for Championship Defense with Training Camp
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Oklahoma City Thunder are set to kick off their annual media day on Monday, September 29, as they prepare for the upcoming NBA season. Training camp will begin on Tuesday, leading up to their preseason opener on the road against the Charlotte Hornets on October 5 in South Carolina.
As the defending champions, the Thunder have high expectations this season. Their first regular season game will be on October 21 against the Brooklyn Nets at Paycom Center. Head coach Mark Daigneault acknowledged the excitement from fans and the responsibility it brings. “The fans in town, the one thing I’ll say is everyone’s been so supportive of the team,” he said.
Players are sharing their experiences as they return to the court. Guard Cason Wallace expressed disappointment over not getting a chance to pose with the Larry O’Brien Trophy, humorously referring to teammates as “ball hogs.” Despite the disappointment, Wallace remains optimistic about the season ahead.
Forward Jaylin Williams, who recently signed a three-year, $24 million contract, had an emotional moment when he shared the news with his family. “We all just cried. It meant a lot being able to provide for my family,” Williams said, reflecting on his journey since joining the Thunder as a second-round pick in 2022.
This offseason also marked a significant moment for Nikola Topić, who made his return after missing his rookie year due to injury. “Just to play the game I love again was pretty amazing,” Topić shared after making his debut at the NBA Summer League.
Meanwhile, Isaiah Joe is determined to control his role this season after a strong performance last year. “My job is to focus on basketball, continue to grow personally, and find ways to help the team win,” Joe said.
In community efforts, center Isaiah Hartenstein has been involved with local initiatives, establishing a basketball court for the Northeast Boys & Girls Club. “It’s about my impact on the community and how I can make a long-lasting difference,” Hartenstein stated.
As new players join the team, they are eager to make an impact. Branden Carlson, who secured another two-way deal, spoke about the importance of consistency this season. “I’m very excited for this opportunity,” he said, looking forward to being part of the team from the start.
Overall, the Thunder are poised for another successful season, aiming to repeat their championship run. Fans can look forward to the first preseason game against the Hornets, setting the stage for what is expected to be an exciting year in Oklahoma City.
