Cash App Users to Receive Compensation After Class Action Settlement

San Francisco, CA – Cash App users are set to receive compensation following a $12.5 million class action lawsuit against Block, Inc., the app’s parent company, over allegations of sending unsolicited text messages.
According to the lawsuit, Cash App used its “Invite Friends” program to send promotional messages to Washington residents without their consent. The messages included referral links, which violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), a law that requires permission before sending commercial messages.
Block, Inc. has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that it has complied with all state and federal laws. However, the company has agreed to a settlement to avoid the expense and time of a lengthy legal battle.
Eligible users who received a Cash App referral text between November 14, 2019, and August 7, 2023, may receive compensation between $88 and $147, depending on the total claims submitted. The settlement states that users must not have “clearly and affirmatively consented” to receive such messages to qualify.
A sample message cited in the settlement reads: “Hey! I’ve been using Cash App to send money and spend using the Cash Card. Try it using my code and you’ll get $5. FVRJ1PH https://cash.app/app/FVRJ1PH.” Notably, these messages did not indicate any money had been sent to the recipient.
Users must submit their claim forms electronically by October 27, 2023, to receive their compensation. If no claim form is submitted, users will forfeit their eligibility. A fairness hearing for the settlement will occur on December 2, 2023, and payments will be issued following final court approval.
