Toronto Police Joseph Eric Aubin Attack

Toronto, Canada — Police have identified a 62-year-old unhoused man who was killed in a violent attack outside city hall last month. The man, Joseph Eric Aubin, was assaulted on August 31 and later died on September 4.

Aubin was attacked near Queen Street West and Bay Street while sleeping on a bench. Investigators allege a 20-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy targeted him with a hammer during a crime spree that included five separate assaults in just over two hours.

Detective Sergeant Stacey McCabe described the incidents as a “very disturbing crime spree.” None of the victims were known to their attackers. Police believe Aubin, who was treated for serious injuries and released from the hospital, succumbed to his injuries days later.

Isaiah Byers, the 20-year-old suspect, faces charges of second-degree murder, three counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, and aggravated assault. The 12-year-old, whose name is protected by law, is charged with similar offenses.

Authorities have made efforts to locate Aubin’s next of kin but have not been successful. They are reaching out to the public for assistance in identifying family members. Police stated Aubin was known as ‘Eric’ and is believed to be from Quebec.

This case remains active, and Toronto police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 416-808-7400 or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously.
