Nassau, NY – With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Rabbi Moshe Hauer ZT”L, a prominent figure in the Jewish community. Rabbi Hauer died suddenly on Shemini Atzeres night. His family chose not to share the news during the holiday to respect the time for gathering relatives.

Rabbi Daniel Rose of the former Shul in Baltimore stated, “With a heart full of unspeakable sorrow, it is my terrible duty to share that Moreinu V’rabeinu, our teacher, our light and leader, Rabbi Moshe Hauer, has passed away.” The community honored Rabbi Hauer’s memory through prayer and celebration during the holiday week, as he would have wanted.

Originally from Montreal, Canada, Rabbi Hauer was an esteemed Rabbi, leader, Talmudic scholar, and educator. He studied at Yeshiva Gedola of Montreal and Ner Yisrael in Baltimore, earning Semicha, a Doctorate in Talmudic Law, and a Bachelor’s in Talmudic Law. He also achieved a Master’s degree in Engineering from Johns Hopkins University.

For over 26 years, Rabbi Hauer served as Rav of Congregation Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion (BJSZ) in Baltimore. He transformed the congregation into a leading center for Torah, prayer, and kindness. His leadership was marked by advocacy for education and community support, focusing on protection for the vulnerable.

In 2020, he became Executive Vice President of the Orthodox Union. He played a key role in national policy, promoting rabbinic unity and voicing the concerns of the Jewish community during crises, including his poignant remarks following the October 7th events in Israel.

Rabbi Hauer is survived by his wife, Rebbetzin Mindi, along with their children and grandchildren. They continue his legacy of love for Torah and the Jewish community. He once said, “I fell in love with the Torah… and somehow, in teaching it to others, I fell in love with Jews.” His memory will live on in the hearts of many.

The levaya and funeral details are being arranged and will be announced soon. The family requests privacy during this difficult time. May Rabbi Hauer’s legacy inspire us all.
