Elon Musk Sean Duffy Spacex Conflict

GLENDALE, Arizona — Elon Musk launched a series of insults against Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on his social media platform X on Tuesday. This came after Duffy suggested that SpaceX may be delayed in its mission to the moon.

Musk, who is the CEO of SpaceX, referred to Duffy as “Sean Dummy” and questioned his qualifications to lead the nation’s space initiatives. “Should someone whose biggest claim to fame is climbing trees be running America’s space program?” Musk posted on Tuesday morning, which he pinned to his X profile.

The conflict escalated when Duffy appeared on CNBC Monday, expressing concerns about SpaceX’s schedule. He mentioned that the company, which has a $2.9 billion contract to provide the lunar lander for NASA‘s Artemis III mission, is behind schedule. NASA aims to return humans to the moon by mid-2027, amidst competition from China.

Duffy stated, “So, I’m going to open up the contract. I’m going to let other space companies compete with SpaceX,” acknowledging the impressive achievements of SpaceX but emphasizing the urgency of the timeline.

Musk countered Duffy’s claims on X, asserting that SpaceX is “the only company to successfully human-certify a new orbital space vehicle in the US.” He also shared posts criticizing Duffy and highlighting the achievements of SpaceX.

The tensions extend beyond Musk and Duffy, with speculation about Jared Isaacman, a known ally of Musk who could potentially lead NASA. Isaacman previously faced a nomination withdrawal by Donald Trump. However, sources indicated he has recently met with Trump regarding the position.

Musk said, “Sean Dummy is trying to kill NASA!” while also sharing positive remarks about Isaacman from others. Isaacman himself expressed respect for Secretary Duffy and a desire for NASA’s ongoing success.

A spokesperson for Duffy clarified that he has not expressed interest in leading NASA but supports the agency being part of the Cabinet. “The President asked him to talk with potential candidates and he’s been happy to help,” the statement said.
