Staunton Considers Extending Pool Season Through Labor Day

Staunton Pools Gypsy Hill Park

STAUNTON, Va. – The City of Staunton may extend its pool season next summer, a move that could change how residents enjoy the hot months. Traditionally, the pools at Gypsy Hill Park and Montgomery Hall Park have closed in early August, coinciding with the start of the school year.

Chris Tuttle, director of Staunton’s Parks and Recreation Department, stated that the pools have consistently closed on the first day of school for nearly 40 years. With local schools starting in the first week of August, this has meant that the pools miss out on the last days of summer.

However, a new pool house under construction at Gypsy Hill Park could lead to a longer swim season. The old pool house, built in 1958, was deemed outdated with corroded steel joists and walls that no longer met modern code standards. The new facility will feature ground-level access, unisex restrooms with enhanced privacy, and a covered concession area.

City Manager Leslie Beauregard expressed optimism about the potential for an extended season during the October 9 City Council meeting. “I would love to, fingers crossed, work very hard to get the season extended through Labor Day. I think that would be amazing with a new pool house,” she said.

While staffing remains a challenge, as many lifeguards are students who return to school, Tuttle noted that no other issues would prevent a longer swimming season. “Staffing is the main issue,” he said. If approved, the extension would apply to both local pools.
