Baldwin County Flood Weather Safety

BALDWIN COUNTY, AL—The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for Baldwin County on Sunday, effective until 2:45 p.m. The service cautioned that excessive rainfall could lead to minor flooding in low-lying areas and places with poor drainage.

The advisory states, “Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.” This warning emphasizes the importance of staying alert in flooded conditions as rain continues.

A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or already happening. Flash floods can develop quickly, sometimes in less than a few minutes. Even areas not currently experiencing rain can suffer from flash floods.

The weather service explained the different levels of flood alerts: a flood warning means flooding is imminent or occurring, while a flood advisory indicates that flooding is possible but may not reach severe levels.

In flood-prone areas, following safety guidelines is crucial. Residents and visitors are urged to move to higher ground at the first sign of flooding. Adhering to evacuation orders from local officials is also critical for safety.

Moreover, disconnecting utilities and appliances before evacuating can reduce the risk of electrical hazards during flooding. People should avoid basements or any room submerged in water due to the presence of electrical outlets.

In situations where individuals feel trapped by flooding, reaching the highest point in the vicinity and contacting emergency services at 911 is vital. Advise against walking through floodwaters, as even a small amount can knock a person off their feet.

The weather service also warns drivers against attempting to cross flooded roads. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a typical vehicle.

As conditions evolve, staying informed through reliable channels will ensure that residents remain safe and prepared during the adverse weather.
