West Ham Beats Newcastle But Remains in Relegation Zone
London, England — West Ham United achieved their second victory of the season in the Premier League with a 3-1 comeback win against Newcastle United on Sunday. This victory marked West Ham’s first home win in eight months.
Newcastle took an early lead with a goal from Jacob Murphy in the fourth minute. The goal came just moments after West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen hit the post on the opposite end. However, Newcastle’s performance was lackluster after the early goal.
West Ham gradually found their rhythm. Lucas Paquetá equalized in the 35th minute with a powerful long-range shot. Just before halftime, Newcastle defender Sven Botman accidentally redirected a cross into his own net, giving West Ham a fortunate lead.
Tomas Soucek sealed the win with a third goal in stoppage time of the second half. West Ham’s last home victory was against Leicester City on February 27.
Despite the win, West Ham remains in the relegation zone but moved ahead of Nottingham Forest, who occupy the third-to-last spot. Forest was the only team West Ham had previously claimed victory over this season.
West Ham’s coach, Nuno Espírito Santo, had managed only one point from his first four games in charge after taking over from Graham Potter. Meanwhile, Newcastle, who remained in 13th place in the 20-team league, struggled to replicate their successful form in the Premier League, having won two of their three Champions League matches and advanced to the quarter-finals of the English League Cup.
Newcastle Coach Eddie Howe substituted Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade at halftime due to their ineffective performances.
