SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (KUTV) — More than 18,500 customers lost power in Salt Lake County Friday afternoon due to the failure of a substation, officials said. Rocky Mountain Power reported an estimated restoration time of six hours.

The outage affected a large portion of Millcreek, with approximately 5,500 customers still without power as of 3 p.m. Rocky Mountain Power initially indicated that power could be restored by 8:30 p.m. but managed to restore electricity to nearly 13,000 customers before that time.

According to Rocky Mountain Power, the cause of the substation failure has not yet been disclosed. Many of the affected customers reside along the Murray-Holladay border, an area heavily impacted.

The power company has provided updates to customers, encouraging them to text “STAT” to 759677 for the latest information on the outage.

This event comes as residents prepare for the evening, with many hoping for a swift return of electricity.
