Actor Seamus O’Hara Shares Career Insights After Oscar Win
DUBLIN, Ireland — Seamus O'Hara, whose career was revitalized after winning an Oscar for his role in “An Irish Goodbye” in 2023, recently discussed his experiences in the spotlight and valuable advice from fellow actor Colin Farrell. O’Hara, who stars as Fenian leader Patrick Cochrane in the new series “House of Guinness,” shared how teamwork among Irish actors has influenced his journey.
In a recent interview with Extra.ie, O’Hara expressed gratitude towards the cast of “The Banshees of Inisherin,” saying they provided immense support during his first Hollywood experience. He recalled their encouragement, especially when they surprised his co-star, James Martin, with a birthday celebration during their acceptance speech. “That Banshees crowd — Colin, Brendan Gleeson, and Kerry Condon — really looked after us,” he said.
O’Hara noted that Colin Farrell offered practical advice on handling the pressures of fame. Farrell’s tips included staying calm in front of photographers and maintaining a positive demeanor. O’Hara said, “Colin was very good at helping us with being confronted by the wall of photographers and journalists for the first time.”
Despite the successes, O’Hara admitted to finding red carpet appearances jolting. He explained, “I live a domestic life with the kids and school runs, and then suddenly you’re in front of a camera. It’s a shock to the system.”
His latest role in “House of Guinness” has received mixed reviews from critics but remains a popular show in both Ireland and the UK. O’Hara acknowledged the criticisms but believes that discussions about the show indicate engagement from the audience. “I’ve heard all of the criticisms… I think that the actors’ work speaks for itself. If people don’t like it, that’s okay,” he said.
Looking ahead, O’Hara is hopeful for another Oscar nod for his role in the upcoming short film “Three Keenings,” directed by Oliver McGoldrick. The film explores the tradition of performative grieving in funerals, a concept that he found challenging yet rewarding to portray. O’Hara remarked, “You’re reading [the script] going, ‘Oh, that’s great,’ but then you have to actually do it. It can be exhausting to find the emotional depth for a scene.”
Residing in Co. Armagh with his family, O’Hara emphasized his commitment to staying home despite his acting career. He has shown his children clips of his work but primarily focuses on their everyday family life. “I suppose my choice to do it was more just that I’m a home bird rather than anything. I love it here,” he concluded.
