Residents Urged to Evacuate Due to Dam Compromise in Polk County
POLK COUNTY, Texas — Emergency authorities are urging residents to evacuate areas south of the Carter Lake dam due to a compromised dam structure. The Polk County Office of Emergency Management announced on Saturday night that damage has been identified in the dam’s embankment, raising concerns about a potential breach.
Residents on Henry Darden Road, Marie Road, Community Drive, Bo Peep, Herb Collins Road, and Girard are specifically advised to leave their homes. Officials stated that assessments are ongoing, but nighttime conditions are complicating efforts to evaluate the damage fully.
The office warns that residents in the affected area could be in the path of possible flooding if the dam fails. “We are urging all residents in these areas to evacuate immediately and remain clear of the zone,” the Polk County Office of Emergency Management stated in a post. “This precaution is necessary to ensure public safety while the situation is evaluated.”
Those who are evacuating are encouraged to seek shelter with friends or family. For those unable to find accommodations, Dunbar Gym at 1103 Dunbar Avenue in Livingston is available as a public shelter.
Emergency management crews, alongside property owners, are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as additional assessments are made. Residents in immediate danger should contact emergency services for assistance.
