Mod Sun Opens Up About Breakup and Healing Journey
Los Angeles, CA – Mod Sun, the singer of the hit song “Bones,” shared insights into his healing process following a breakup with Avril Lavigne. In a recent appearance on the ‘Dumb Blonde Podcast,’ recorded in June 2024 and released on November 6, the 38-year-old musician reflected on their one-year romance and the lessons it brought him.
Mod, whose real name is Derek Smith, recalled how they first met while collaborating on music during a challenging time for the world. “We met through a truly awesome label making music,” he said. “It was lovely. She was a true talent being around.” Their professional relationship blossomed into a personal one, highlighted by their duet “Flames,” released in January 2021, before they made their relationship Instagram official later that year.
Despite the joy they found in music, their relationship faced difficulties. Mod described how they “dove in really fast” and acknowledged that while they had a strong connection, they were also very different people. “I think I had a great influence on her,” he noted. “I think she couldn’t have had a more wonderful influence on me from the side of [helping me] grow up.” However, he admitted that he struggled with feelings of being lost in recent years.
While the reasons for their breakup remain unclear, Mod shared that he has been focusing on his mental health and personal growth. “I pray every single day,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of leading with empathy rather than harboring resentment. He noted how his perspective on previous relationships has shifted. “If we had done this talk three months ago, I might’ve been like, ‘F–k that person,’” he confessed. “But I’m now just like, ‘If I run into you? It’s all love. I hope you’re well.’”
Mod’s journey illustrates a broader message of healing and personal development as he continues to reflect on his past relationships and work on his spiritual health.
