Veterans Day Parade New York City

NEW YORK CITY, NY — Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, is observed each year on November 11 to honor those who served in the U.S. military. This federal holiday has been in place since 1954, allowing for a day of gratitude towards veterans from all wars.

The day marks the end of World War I, when an armistice was signed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs emphasizes the importance of recognizing veterans for their “patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve.”

This year’s Veterans Day parade in New York City, organized by the United War Veterans Council, is set to kick off at 11 a.m. ET. More than 20,000 service members, 25 floats, and 280 marching units will participate along Fifth Avenue.

Federal offices, banks, and many businesses will be closed in observance of the holiday. However, grocery stores and some restaurants, including popular chains, will operate on regular hours or offer specials for veterans. While U.S. Postal Service locations will close, private carriers like FedEx and UPS will continue services, although with some delays.

Veterans Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel and is a time for communities to come together in recognition. This year, as we celebrate the contributions of our veterans, it is important to also recognize the joy and unity that can come from these observances.
