LOS ANGELES, CA — Eddie Murphy opens up about his legendary career in his new Netflix documentary, “Being Eddie,” which premiered on November 12. The film chronicles Murphy’s rise from a stand-up comedian to an iconic movie star, while also revealing personal struggles and anecdotes about his life.

In the documentary, Murphy addresses significant moments in his career, including how he replaced Richard Pryor in films like “Trading Places” and how he famously turned down cocaine while with Robin Williams and John Belushi. He also discusses his ongoing battle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and shares a shocking story about the late actor Yul Brynner.

Murphy recalls his father’s murder, which his brother Charlie Murphy described as the result of a “lover’s quarrel.” He reflects on how his stepfather influenced his development into the man he is today. The film features interviews with fellow comedians and friends such as Arsenio Hall, Chris Rock, and Jerry Seinfeld, who discuss Murphy’s impact on comedy.

Notably, Murphy discusses a past grievance with “Saturday Night Live” stemming from a joke made by David Spade in 1995, which he felt was a cheap shot at his declining career. “I wasn’t like, ‘F—k David Spade.’ I was like, ‘F—k SNL,'” he said. However, he later reconciled with the show, even hosting for the first time in 35 years in 2019.

Throughout “Being Eddie,” Murphy shares anecdotes from his youth, including an encounter with Muhammad Ali, whom he refers to as his hero. He humorously recounts how he once playfully punched Ali during a meeting. Murphy also corrects the longstanding misconception about his laughter in “Beverly Hills Cop” being directed at his “Delirious” outfit.

Despite his past struggles, including navigating the pressures of fame and substance abuse, Murphy expresses a desire to return to stand-up comedy. He says he records new material ideas on his phone whenever inspiration strikes. Murphy’s optimism shines through as he reflects on his past and anticipates his future projects, including the possibility of incorporating puppets of Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby into new acts.

While paying homage to his late brother Charlie, Murphy emphasizes the importance of cherishing memories without dwelling on the pain of loss. As he moves forward in life and comedy, Murphy is determined to continue entertaining his fans as long as he can.
