Winter Storms Set to Hit Northern US This Week
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A series of winter storms could impact parts of the northern United States this week, bringing heavy snow and strong winds. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm watches for several states, including Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and New York.
In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, some areas may receive over 12 inches of snow between Tuesday and Thursday, with expected wind gusts up to 45 mph. The NWS warns that travel conditions could become “very difficult to impossible” due to reduced visibility from snow accumulation and strong winds that can bring down trees.
Northern Wisconsin residents along the Lake Superior shoreline should prepare for snowfall amounts ranging from 6 to 12 inches and wind gusts reaching 35 mph from Tuesday through Wednesday. Ashland and Iron counties are projected to see particularly heavy snowfall, exceeding 12 inches.
Across northern and central Minnesota, multiple winter storm watches are in place, with some locations expecting up to 9 inches of snow from Tuesday to Wednesday. Meanwhile, North Dakota can anticipate a minimum of 4 inches of snow along with strong winds through Monday and Tuesday.
By midweek, parts of western and upstate New York could experience lake-effect snow exceeding 7 inches, potentially leading to dangerous travel conditions from Wednesday to Friday. Officials advise residents to delay travel when possible during this winter weather event.
The NWS explains that winter storm watches are issued when conditions favor a significant winter storm event, which may involve heavy snow, sleet, ice storms, or blowing snow. AccuWeather meteorologist Reneé Duff noted that those in the Great Lakes region may face challenges from typical lake-effect snow showers, which could lead to reduced visibility and slippery road conditions.
To ensure safety during these adverse weather conditions, travelers are urged to stay informed about weather updates and to adjust their travel plans accordingly.
