Actor Aaron Pierre has secured a prominent role as John Stewart in the upcoming DC Studios‘ television adaptation, “Lanterns,” based on the popular Green Lantern comic series. This announcement follows a rigorous casting process that highlighted the significance of this character, who is one of DC’s first Black superheroes. Pierre will star alongside Kyle Chandler, who is in negotiations to portray Hal Jordan.

The series is the brainchild of renowned creators including Chris Mundy, known for “Ozark,” Damon Lindelof, recognized for his work on “Watchmen,” and Tom King, an acclaimed comic book writer. They are collaborating to craft a narrative that introduces viewers to the dynamics between Stewart, a newcomer to the Green Lantern Corps, and Jordan, a seasoned member of this intergalactic force tackling crime across galaxies, including a stint in the American heartland where they investigate a murder mystery.

Produced by HBO in partnership with Warner Bros Television and DC Studios, “Lanterns” will span eight episodes. James Hawes, noted for his work on “Slow Horses,” is set to direct the first two episodes and will also serve as an executive producer.

The casting process was highly competitive, narrowing down to Aaron Pierre and Stephan James, an actor known from films like “Race.” After extensive screen tests, Pierre was chosen, marking another significant role for the actor whose recent projects include “Rebel Ridge,” a number one hit on Netflix. He is also the voice behind the titular character in Barry Jenkins‘ upcoming animated “Lion King” prequel, “Mufasa.”

Chandler, a familiar face on television with roles in series such as “Friday Night Lights” and “Bloodline,” is expected to bring depth to the character of Hal Jordan. The show aims to present a gritty narrative reminiscent of “True Detective,” as it navigates the complex relationship and adventures of these two intergalactic law enforcers.

John Stewart, created by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams, first appeared in “Green Lantern No. 87” in 1971, a decade after the introduction of Hal Jordan and the Corps. The series is highly anticipated, especially as it marks a major endeavor under the leadership of DC Studios’ heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Aaron Pierre is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, Hamilton Hodell, and Sloane Offer.
