FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has publicly refuted claims that he played a role in the decision by New York Jets owner Woody Johnson to dismiss head coach Robert Saleh after only five games into the season. During his weekly segment on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday, Rodgers described such allegations as “patently false” and expressed displeasure over the extent of influence people assumed he wielded. “It’s interesting the amount of power that people think that I have, which I don’t,” Rodgers stated, maintaining his support for the interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich and potential adjustments to the coaching staff.

The Jets announced Saleh’s firing on Tuesday morning, leading to a series of meetings within the organization, which included a council meeting with players and owner Woody Johnson, a players-only meeting, and an address by Ulbrich to the entire team. Emphasizing accountability was the central theme relayed to the players, confirming sources.

Despite rumors, teammates, including tight end Tyler Conklin, claim the belief that Rodgers influenced Saleh’s firing hasn’t taken hold among the players. Conklin noted, “I honestly, truly believe that [Rodgers had no role]. I mean, Aaron probably took this harder than almost anybody.” Rodgers himself expressed compassion for Saleh, lamenting that different circumstances, including improved personal performance, could have altered the situation.

On Monday night, Rodgers received a call from Johnson, though the future of Saleh was not mentioned during the brief conversation with the Jets owner. Rodgers recounted the call, saying, “He just asked me how I was doing,” following Rodgers’ own injury during a game. “We talked about the game and how disappointed I was in my performance,” Rodgers added. Discussions of future plans were not disclosed, Rodgers stated, emphasizing Johnson’s autonomy in decisions.

Meanwhile, players continue to process the unexpected coaching change. Notably, quarterback Sauce Gardner described being “shocked” upon learning about Saleh’s firing through a news article, having been away from social media at the time. Gardner expressed his gratitude towards the former head coach for positively impacting his career and life.

Gardner remarked, “The reality is, we’re 2-3. Everything is still in front of us. Coach Saleh and I were extremely close,” underscoring his respect for Saleh and suggesting that players remain dedicated to performing in his honor.

Ulbrich mentioned reaching out to various coaches, including Washington’s Dan Quinn, to seek guidance on his interim position as head coach.
