Academy Award Winner Gene Hackman Found Dead in New Mexico Home

Santa Fe, New Mexico — Legendary actor Gene Hackman has been found dead in his home, along with his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, and their dog, according to local police. The bodies were discovered on Wednesday afternoon, February 26, 2025. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed the news, stating that no foul play is suspected.
Hackman, 95, whose illustrious career included two Academy Awards, was married to Arakawa, 63, for 34 years. Their passing in their home in the Santa Fe Summit community has left fans and family in shock. Mendoza reported that the deputies responding to the scene were conducting a welfare check and subsequently uncovered their bodies.
“All I can say is that we’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant,” Mendoza said during a press conference. “I want to assure the community and neighborhood that there’s no immediate danger to anyone.” A cause of death has yet to be announced.
Hackman was born on January 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California. With a career spanning over six decades, he became known for his exceptional roles in iconic films such as “The French Connection,” “Unforgiven,” and “Bonnie and Clyde.” He earned numerous accolades, including two Oscars and three Golden Globe Awards.
Following his retirement from acting in 2004, Hackman settled in Santa Fe. He often expressed gratitude for his role in “The French Connection” and its influence on his career. Reflecting on his career in a 2021 interview, he spoke about the importance of passion in his work. “Filmmaking has always been risky — both physically and emotionally,” Hackman stated, adding that he views his filmography as a mix of hits and misses.
His marriage to Faye Maltese from 1956 to 1986 produced three children: Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie. While Hackman maintained a relatively private life, he often shared his fondness for family. In a past interview, he shared, “I still hug my son to this day, and I thank God that we are able to do that.”
The actor’s children, Christopher, Elizabeth Jean, and Leslie Anne, have largely stayed out of the media spotlight, choosing to lead private lives away from the public eye. Hackman’s passing marks the end of an era for Hollywood, where he is fondly remembered not only for his remarkable acting talents but also for his genuine personality and warmth.
As the community mourns the loss of Hackman and Arakawa, tributes from fans and colleagues continue to pour in, commemorating the legacy of the man who captivated audiences worldwide.
