Acclaimed Bengali Actress Sreela Majumdar Passes Away at 65
Renowned Bengali actress Sreela Majumdar, known for her extraordinary performances in both parallel and mainstream cinema, has tragically passed away at the age of 65. After battling cancer for the past three years, Majumdar took her last breath on Saturday at her home in Kolkata.
Majumdar’s husband, S.N.M. Abdi, a journalist and columnist, confirmed that she had been undergoing treatment for cancer and was admitted to the hospital earlier this month. However, she was discharged and returned home, where she peacefully passed away.
Majumdar was an integral part of several iconic movies directed by the late Mrinal Sen. Her exceptional portrayals of characters such as ‘Dugga’ in ‘Akaler Sandhane,’ ‘Minu’ in ‘Ekdin Pratidin,’ and ‘Srija’ in ‘Kharij,’ all directed by Sen, were deeply admired by critics and audiences.
She made her acting debut at the age of 16 in Sen’s ‘Parashuram’ in 1980. Throughout her career, Majumdar worked with renowned actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, and the late Smita Patil, among others, in various alternative Indian films.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences upon hearing the news of Majumdar’s demise. She acknowledged Majumdar’s notable contributions to Indian cinema and expressed her sorrow at the loss felt by the Bengal film industry.
