ActionSA Opposes Proposal to Rename Sandton Drive in Johannesburg

Sandton Drive Johannesburg Street

ActionSA has publicly denounced the recent proposal by the City of Johannesburg to rename Sandton Drive, calling it an unnecessary diversion of the city’s limited resources. This stance, broadcasted in a recent statement, emphasizes that the current name, ‘Sandton Drive’, is both neutral and fitting for a diverse, cosmopolitan area like Johannesburg.

The party has committed itself to lobbying against the proposal across all political platforms in the city council. A representative for ActionSA commented, “We believe that the renaming holds no substantial benefits for our residents.” They went on to state that while naming public landmarks to reinforce heritage can be beneficial, it should not overshadow pressing issues.

ActionSA highlighted several challenges faced by Johannesburg, including water shortages, unemployment, inadequate housing, deteriorating infrastructure, and rising crime rates. The party argues that these issues require urgent attention and resources, and that changing a street name which is not considered offensive does not align with these priorities.

A recent report by City Power indicated that approximately 81,000 streetlights are not operational in Johannesburg, an issue compounded by a high incidence of potholes. On average, about 1,000 potholes are reported weekly, but the city manages to repair only 4,500 potholes per month. ActionSA has urged the city to prioritize these infrastructural concerns to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its residents.

Furthermore, ActionSA is encouraging residents to actively oppose the renaming proposal by submitting their comments and suggestions to the City of Johannesburg. They have been asked to direct their inputs to Dominica Masalesa within 28 days following the notice’s publication.
