Actor Tray Chaney’s Son Injured in Tornado as Family Home Destroyed

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. – Actor Tray Chaney, known for his role in HBO‘s “The Wire,” shared the devastating impact of a tornado that struck his home on May 29, 2025. The tornado severely damaged his residence and left his 18-year-old son, Malachi Chaney, fighting for his life in the intensive care unit.
In an emotional Instagram video, Tray recounted the harrowing experience. He reported that his son was thrown approximately 300 feet from their home during the storm. “I wish I could replace the pain with my son,” he expressed tearfully, wishing he could take his son’s place in the hospital.
Tray said that on that Thursday afternoon, he and Malachi were enjoying a peaceful day until the weather changed suddenly. He recalled, “At 3 p.m., I heard the wind, and I felt everything; then, in a split second, my house was gone.” The tornado caused extensive damage, obliterating their home built just five years prior.
The National Weather Service reported that multiple tornadoes hit northern Georgia, with Tray’s neighborhood suffering significant destruction. “It sounded like thunder, but it was more terrifying,” said neighbor Andreal Mallard, who witnessed the event.
After the tornado struck, Tray regained consciousness under debris and was desperate to find his son. He wrote about the panic he felt as he crawled out, calling out for Malachi. Eventually, neighbors helped locate Malachi in the woods behind their house, where he lay severely injured.
Malachi was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, facing multiple injuries, including broken ribs and facial fractures. Tray sustained minor injuries and was treated at Piedmont Henry Hospital before rushing to be by his son’s side.
Despite the chaos, Tray expressed gratitude for the support he has received and acknowledged the shift in his perspective after the traumatic event. “Everything is gone, but I’m still living and breathing to tell the story. That’s what matters the most,” he stated.
A community effort has begun to assist the Chaney family in their recovery and rebuilding process. As they navigate this challenging time, Tray urged his followers to value their loved ones, writing, “Cherish life. Hug your loved ones now. We’ll never be the same.” Malachi remains hospitalized while showing early signs of recovery, such as being able to squeeze his father’s hand.
