Adani’s Mundra Port Achieves Record-Breaking 7 Million TEU Mark
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) announced that Mundra Port, under the leadership of tycoon Gautam Adani, has successfully surpassed the milestone of handling 7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for the first time in its 25 years of operation. This achievement showcases the port’s exceptional infrastructure, operational efficiency, and capability to manage substantial cargo volumes.
Located in Gujarat, Mundra Port is the largest commercial port in India and also holds the distinction of being the country’s biggest container facility.
During the fiscal year 2023, Mundra Port managed a total of 6.64 million TEUs, representing a significant portion of the 155.4 million tonnes of cargo processed at the port, marking a historic high since its establishment.
Comparatively, the 12 major ports owned by the Indian government collectively handled 11.391 million TEUs in FY23, with Jawaharlal Nehru Port handling 6.05 million TEUs during the same period.
Over the past decade, Mundra Port has experienced an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 16% in container volumes, driven by its customer-focused strategies such as enhanced productivity, innovative logistics solutions, swift vessel turnaround times, and efficient container evacuation through railway and double stack container trains.
The port’s container segment has witnessed a remarkable 15% CAGR growth in the last 10 years, outpacing the overall port volume growth rate of 7% CAGR.
Operational across five container terminals spanning 12 berths with a combined capacity of approximately 8 million TEUs, Mundra Port is currently in the process of commissioning a new T3 berth with a capacity of 0.8 million TEUs to manage the escalating volumes efficiently.
With a consistent annual growth rate in double digits, Mundra Port is nearing its full container handling capacity and necessitates further expansion to meet the escalating demand.
While Mundra Port’s container terminals are presently operating at roughly 85% capacity utilization — surpassing the industry ideal level of 70% efficiency — the port has adeptly mitigated bottlenecks to ensure uninterrupted operations.
