Adelaide's Winter Solstice Celebrations: From Stonehenge Rituals To Brighton Street Party

Residents of Aldinga Arts Eco Village in Adelaide‘s southern suburbs have developed a unique tradition to celebrate the Winter Solstice. Each June 21st, starting with an early morning dip by 84-year-old John, the community gathers for a ritual at SA’s ‘Stonehenge‘.

The creator of this tradition, Bruce Munday, foresees that people will prefer Aldinga Arts Eco Village over the original Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England. The event at Aldinga Arts Eco Village offers a 30-minute ritual that symbolizes the transition into winter.

On the other side of Adelaide, along Jetty Road in Brighton, the city is gearing up for the annual Winter Solstice street party. This vibrant event is set to take place on June 22, welcoming visitors to revel in the charm of the winter months.

Situated at Brighton’s Jetty Road, the Winter Solstice street party will feature cozy fire pits, festive lighting, live music, and a myriad of children’s activities to keep all attendees entertained throughout the evening.

The event will be accompanied by a range of food and drink outlets, artisanal food trucks serving delectable dishes, and local retail stores extending their hours to embrace the festival’s spirit.

The main stage at the entry of The Esplanade Hotel car park will host live music performances, including sets by Junelee, The Botanicals, Sabor a Cuba, and Emily Grace. These acts will ensure lively entertainment from late afternoon till night.

A dedicated ‘kids zone’ at the intersection of Gurrs Road and Jetty Road will offer interactive activities such as crafting solstice postcards with the Brighton Library Team, outdoor games, face painting, hair braiding, and even an all-ages Silent Disco helmed by DJ Joyfool.

The Winter Solstice street party at Jetty Road, Brighton, aims to unite the local community in celebration of the season. With its diverse offerings, the event promises an enchanting night filled with merriment, music, and culinary delights.

Whether attending the traditional gathering at Aldinga Arts Eco Village or joining the lively street party in Brighton, South Australians have ample options to embrace the Winter Solstice and usher in the cold months with warmth and joy.
