AFC Wimbledon‘s Carabao Cup third-round match against Newcastle United has been moved due to severe flooding at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. The announcement came after flooding from the River Wandle rendered the London-based stadium unfit for the game originally scheduled for Tuesday night. This comes in the wake of a severe weather warning, with the Met Office predicting as much rainfall in parts of England over 24 hours as typically seen in a month.

Photos from the Cherry Red Records Stadium depict severe damage, with one corner of the pitch particularly affected, resembling more of a sand trap than a football field. The walkways around the ground were reportedly submerged, leading to the closure of the stadium until further notice. As a result, the match has been relocated to St James' Park in Newcastle, nearly 300 miles away.

In a statement, the English Football League (EFL) confirmed the decision to reverse the venue following discussions with both clubs. “Following an agreement between both clubs and subsequent approval from the management committee of the competition, the fixture will now be reversed,” stated the EFL.

AFC Wimbledon expressed their regret over the disruption this change would cause their fans. The club stated they are actively working on providing travel arrangements for supporters and will confirm ticket procedures and refund processes shortly. The club acknowledged the challenge this poses for their fans eager to support the team.

The flooding and subsequent relocation have had broader implications for AFC Wimbledon. Their League Two match against Crewe Alexandra, scheduled for October 1, will also require rescheduling. AFC Wimbledon has indicated updates regarding other fixtures, including a home game against Accrington, will be announced soon. The Dons reached the Carabao Cup’s third round after a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over Premier League team Ipswich Town.

Newcastle United advanced to this stage in similar fashion, defeating Nottingham Forest on penalties. The fourth round of the Carabao Cup is planned to begin the week of October 28.
