James Peatling, a versatile utility player for the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants, has become central to a heated battle amongst several clubs eager to secure his skills for their rosters. The 24-year-old’s name has emerged prominently in trade discussions as multiple teams seek to bolster their football squads for the upcoming seasons.

Among the clubs showing interest in Peatling are the Adelaide Crows, who are reportedly keen on acquiring both Peatling and his teammate Isaac Cumming. AFL Media’s Cal Twomey confirmed the Crows’ interest, noting the potential of a dual acquisition given that Peatling and Cumming share a strong bond formed during their tenure in the Giants Academy. “There is a link there clearly; they’re pretty tight with each other,” Twomey stated.

In contrast, Collingwood is seeking to enhance its midfield options as veteran players such as Scott Pendlebury and Jack Crisp advance in age, and while Tom Mitchell contends with injury concerns. James Peatling’s capabilities could provide the youthful boost needed for Nick Daicos, a bright young star at the club. However, Collingwood’s draft assets may complicate their ability to procure Peatling, potentially shifting their focus towards free agents like Peatling’s teammate, Harry Perryman.

Meanwhile, the GWS Giants have not ruled out retaining Peatling, offering a three-year contract. Nonetheless, the prospect of increased game time in a primary midfield role might entice Peatling to explore opportunities with other clubs, especially as the Giants’ midfield is stacked with key players like Tom Green and Stephen Coniglio.

For Melbourne, the focus is on strengthening their lineup after a disappointing 2024 season. With established talents like Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver leading the charge, integrating Peatling could address recent gaps left by players like Alex Neal-Bullen and Angus Brayshaw.

The St Kilda Saints also emerge as contenders, leveraging available finances to attract significant prospects during the off-season. Peatling’s addition to a developing midfield may complement Captain Jack Steele and bring renewed energy to the squad.

In Western Australia, West Coast Eagles appear to have exited the race for Peatling, opting instead to recruit talent familiar with new coach Andrew McQualter from his previous stint at Punt Road, with Liam Baker and Jack Graham joining their ranks.

The Western Bulldogs remain in contention, fueled by a desire to enhance their midfield, notably after departing players such as Bailey Smith. Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary mentioned the Bulldogs’ strong late interest in Peatling, hinting at strategic moves to entice the talented player.
